Mackay Fishing Adventures
Avid fishermen will be very pleased to know that the Mackay Region boasts some of the most spectacular fishing spots in the country! Whether you enjoy saltwater or freshwater fishing, Mackay offers an array of areas in which you can wet a line including beaches, reefs, estuaries, creeks and numerous well-stocked inland dams. So don’t forget to pack your rod and reel, your favourite fishing lures and the like ready to catch your next big whopper!
Begin your boating adventure from Mackay Marina, gateway to the islands and The Great Barrier Reef! The marina and shipyard offer excellent facilities for those with their own boat. Dock at one of their berths or launch from the five-lane public boat ramp! Try the Mackay Marina Breakwater for jewfish, mackerel and bream or the Pioneer River for whiting, flathead and bream. Local dams at Kinchant, Teemburra and Eungella provide freshwater fishing options for barramundi, sooty grunter and sleepy cod.
If deep-sea fishing is more your style, choose from the reefs just offshore or around the nearby islands. Located in a unique position, Mackay sits on the meeting point of northern and southern fish species, so anglers have the best of both worlds! Why not book a charter fishing trip and make the most of your marine experience? These usually include all tackle, bait, lunch, refreshments and expert local knowledge.
For those without a vessel, do not despair! Many of the best fishing spots can be reached without a boat, so make sure you give land-based angling a go. Just north of Mackay you can catch bream, whiting, flathead, mackerel, tuna or trevally on the beach at Cape Hillsborough. Seaforth also offers great fishing off the beach, near the Victor Creek Ramp, Finlaysons Point or offshore around the Newry Island Group. Whatever location tickles your fancy, you are bound to catch something for your evening meal whether it be a fish or the beautiful sunset over magical Mackay!
