Serenity CoastHead south of Mackay to Sarina and the Serenity Coast. On your way, the old General Gordon Hotel near Eton stands proudly amongst the cane fields — a short detour off the highway for a cold beer or counter meal. Just over thirty minutes from Mackay, Sarina is located in the foothills of Connors Range. Sugar is an important industry for the area — a mini operational sugar mill and distillery will open in early 2006 and become an important draw card for the town. The Sarina markets held on the last Sunday of each month are the largest in the Mackay Region. The shire offers a variety of beaches with over 90kms fronting the Coral Sea. Grasstree, Salonika and Sarina Beaches are quiet yet delightful; popular for fishing and perfect for wasting an afternoon in our glorious climate. Ah the serenity! The area is also home to the largest coal export facility in the southern hemisphere. Best vantage point is from the Haypoint Lookout - you will be captivated by the sheer size the operations that are busily loading dozens of tankers patiently waiting offshore. New to the region is the fasunating and sweet Sarina Sugar Shed. The Sarina Sugar Shed offers a truly unique experience, you can watch how sugar is produced right before your eyes and taste some of the delicious 'goodies' with sugar such as homemade lollies, fairy floss, jam and sugarcane juices. Further south you will arrive in the Broadsound Shire. Remote Cape Palmerston National Park is accessible by 4WD only and great for fishing and camping.
