Bird Watching
The Mackay Region is a paradise for birdwatchers. The region's 260km of undiscovered and barely developed coastline are a haven for the various bird species to thrive and create their own natural habitat in peaceful surrounds. The seaside communities of Sarina such as Lake Barfield at Salonika Beach are a fantastic spot to see over 200 species of birds. The National Parks in the region present a remarkably diverse landscape harbouring some beautiful bird species. At Cape Hillsborough National Park, over 150 species of birdlife and butterflies live within the park's lowland rainforest and vine forest. Cape Palmerston National Park's biodiversity protects a range of plant communities that are home to permanent and migratory residents like the striking pied imperial pigeon and Eungella National Park has had over 100 bird species recorded, including the Wompoo pigeon, crimson rosella, regent bower birds and the infamous Eungella Honey Eater, one of only five new bird species discovered in Australia in the past 50 years. Offshore, the Great Barrier Reef Islands of Keswick, Brampton and Scawfell offer no shortage of spectacular birdlife. If you are lucky, you may witness the majestic white-bellied sea eagle and smaller osprey soar above the cliffs, rocky shores and reefs. Close to the city, there are reserves, lagoons and beaches that also harbour many species of beautiful birds. |
