HERITAGE

Mackay’s history is one of great inspiration and pride. Mackay was named after George Mackay, father of John Mackay, whose pioneering spirit led him and his party from New England (NSW) to discover the Pioneer River Valley in 1860. Within a few years of settlement, sugar became the dominant industry and in more recent times, coal mining developments have emerged.

The long established history of Mackay remains preserved in its heritage buildings and monuments, and museums. From the beauty of the many fine older buildings that you can explore on the Mackay Heritage Walk, to the fascinating artifacts on display in one of our many museums, you can take a journey through history to today.
