FAQ's

If you are planning a trip to the radiant region of Mackay and need a few questions answered, see below for some important information.

What is the climate like?

Just 340km north of the Tropic of Capricorn, the Mackay-Isaac region’s hot summers and mild, sunny winters make our climate one of the best in the world. Average daily temperatures range from just over 22C in the winter months of June-August and up to 30C during the summer months December-February. Rainfall peaks in the Mackay-Isaac region during summer months. Be wary of the very strong sun/UV in Australia.  Drink plenty of water regularly to keep hydrated and protect your skin from burning. Seek shade when outside, cover up with clothing and wear a sun protective hat, sunglasses and SPF 30+ sunscreen.

What should I wear?

Relaxed, casual, lightweight clothing with something a little warmer for the winter evenings is recommended, especially in the hinterland.

Is access to money readily available?

Banks are open Monday to Friday. Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs), credit card and Eftpos are readily available.  International currency and travellers cheques can be exchanged at most large banks and Harvey World Travel.

Need help!

Consult accredited Visitor Information Centres (displaying the yellow and blue sign) for reliable local and regional information, including local safety issues (such as stinging jellyfish or crocodiles, unique road conditions and beach safety).

Are there any safety warnings I should be aware of?

Two types of dangerous jellyfish, the Chironex box jellyfish and the much smaller Irukandji, may be present in our tropical waters.  The higher risk period is October to May. Observe signs, swim in stinger resistant enclosures or patrolled beaches and wear protective clothing. Please see the website link below for more information.
