Big Focus on Beaches in The Mackay Region
Does The Mackay Region boast some of the best beaches in Australia?
That’s the question Brad Farmer, author of Australia’s 101 Best Beaches, asked as he toured the region today (August 31), checking out a number of beaches and enjoying lunch at the Eimeo Pacific Hotel.
With 11,761 beaches in Australia to choose from, Brad is embarking on a 60-day tour with a research team to review thousands of locations to see if he can narrow down the list to just 101 beaches – and find Australia’s best.
The Global Beach Ambassador for Tourism Australia published his first book in 2012, with Cape Hillsborough Beach and Eimeo Beach being listed in the top 101.
Brad and his team began the journey last week, and are being supported by Britz campervans. The winning selection of existing and newly-evaluated beaches will be announced in late November 2016.
Meanwhile Tourism and Events Queensland have recently voted Cape Hillsborough Beach and Keswick Island’s Basil Bay among 14 of the Most Beautiful Beaches in Queensland, alongside places like Palm Cove in Cairns, Whitehaven Beach in The Whitsundays and Noosa Beach on the Sunshine Coast.
Watching sunrise and sunset with the wallabies and kangaroos at its unique national-park- meets-sea location has given Cape Hillsborough Beach the title of one of the State’s most beautiful beaches.
Cape Hillsborough Nature Tourist Park owners Ben and Renae Atherton say it’s a favourite spot for many visitors and locals who want to enjoy the peace and quiet.
“I think the appeal is that Cape Hillsborough Beach is uncommercialised, it’s protected and it has got some really great nature walks.,” Ben said.
Basil Bay on Keswick Island is touted as the ‘understated paradise’ that has slipped under the radar. With no chance of having to fight for a spot on the beach, Basil Bay is one of the region’s most picturesque locations.
Mackay Tourism General Manager, Tas Webber, said it’s no surprise The Mackay Region is being mentioned as a top location for beach-goers.
“The Mackay Region has beautiful and uncrowded beaches, each with its own unique appeal that attracts a range of visitors,” Tas said.
“With September school holidays just around the corner, The Mackay Region is the perfect spot for a beach-side escape.”
