With plenty of library events, an artist’s talk and a ‘hackathon’ for entrepreneurs, there’s sure to be something for everyone in the region this week. Don’t miss the free program of STEAM inspired entertainment at the Unearthed event at the MECC this weekend!

1) Reminisce Cafe

Memories and conversations keep us connected to our loved ones. Every month, the library is having a get together with a cuppa, as they introduce you to the magic of reminiscing. They will access a wonderful selection of resources to encourage friendly conversation, intellectual stimulation and reflection for those living with dementia, their family and carers. 2) BMA Kidspace

Artspace Mackay

Join local artists and performers for creative art activities designed for toddlers and their adults. Drop-in anytime between 10am and 2pm (live children's music from 11.30am to 12.15pm). This is a free program giving children under five a chance to explore and have fun with art in a climate of co-operative learning. Proudly presented by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance. 4) Artist’s Talk: In conversation with Shelley Engwirda
Thursday, August 18, 6pm to 7pm

Foyer Gallery, Artspace Mackay

Join Mackay artist Shelley Engwirda as she talks about her exhibition “We Rise”. Inspired by her experience as a new grandmother, Engwirda explores the way female artists have been regarded historically. For this exhibition she examines the success and failures of the women’s movement through her multidisciplinary practice. The artist’s large scale patchwork quilts, alongside glass work, respond to what she considers major moments in the women’s movement from the 1970s to present.  This event will be Auslan interpreted and amplified for patrons with hearing difficulties. 5) Anime-Manga Club

Come on out anime and manga fans! A place to share your favourites, or most despised, story ideas, drawings and all things Japanese. For young adults aged 12 to 18 years. Bookings required.

6) Spirit Revolutions Presents Peter Williams Medium Live
Thursday, August 18, 7pm

MECC Lynette Denny Space

After numerous sell out performances across Australia and overseas, hugely popular psychic-medium and author of the book Searching Spirit, Peter Williams, returns to the stage once again. Peter is known for bringing a modern and refreshing feel to his events. He amazes audiences with his ability to communicate with loved ones passed over, but does so with energy, laughter and a heartfelt respect. A meet and greet session is available after the show as well as tickets for a Q&A experience. This is a show for 16+ years. Book tickets.

8) MackHack 2022
Friday, August 19 to Sunday, August 21

MackHack is back! A ‘hackathon’ long weekend where teams work on genuine industry challenges with the objective of driving the commercial acceleration of METS and mining, mining equipment, technology, or services locally and across the state. This cross sector event will feature guest speakers, case studies and workshops in AI, Robotics, XR (VR,AR,MR) technology. It will bring together thinkers, makers, doers, creatives, innovators and entrepreneurs, designers, engineers and programmers to solve internal business challenges, or bigger industry challenges. 9) Unearthed Free Community Event

MECC

Enjoy an action-packed program of free STEAM inspired entertainment for the whole family. Discover local megafauna and prehistoric sea monsters from real fossils to digital models, live science experiments, music and talks, drones, robotics and virtual realities, meet Queensland Museum Network curators, battle it out in a Minecraft competition and get creative with the art of science and more! Book Week - Picnic in the Gardens
Thursday, August 25, 9.30am to 11.30am

Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens

Dress up as your favourite book character and join in for a picnic at the Botanic Gardens, Story Time under the trees and Baby Bounce on the lawn. Join our Libraries team for face painting, puppets, craft activities and heaps more for children up to five years old. Baby Bounce will begin at 10am and Story Time will begin at 10:30am. Amy Shark – See U Somewhere Australia Tour

Amy Shark is embarking on her biggest tour ever! The “I Said Hi” and “Adore” singer scored nine nominations at the 2018 ARIA Awards and four wins, including Album Of The Year, Best Female Artist and Best Pop Release. Amy has toured internationally and performed on several major US television shows including The Late Late Show with James Corden and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and collaborated with renowned musicians in many genres such as Ed Sheeran, Travis Barker, and Keith Urban.
