The 13th World Sooty Championship, sponsored by INDT, is a great weekend of camping and fishing scheduled over the May Day weekend at the picturesque Eungella Dam. Come and compete in the only fishing competition specifically targeting the native Sooty Grunter. With over AUD10,000 in prizes and giveaways competitors travel from all over Queensland as well as the southern states but the greatest numbers of competitors are from the Mackay region. The tournament is run over three sessions on the Saturday and Sunday and is limited to 100 adult anglers. Families and junior anglers encouraged to compete. All junior anglers receive a tournament fishing shirt. As a non-profit community organisation, this popular tournament is MAFSA’s major annual fundraiser. The competitors and sponsors are helping to create “A Better Fishing Future” for the Mackay region. MASFA have stocked nearly half a million sooty grunter and almost four hundred thousand barramundi into the dam since 1980. Online nominations open on 27 February and close on 28 April.
