Mackay To Host Australia's Top Anglers
Australia’s premier fishing competition is set to be held in the nation’s premier fishing destination next week as Mackay plays host to the Australian Fishing Championships (AFC).
Now in its sixteenth year, the AFC Series will see some of Australia’s finest anglers battle it out on The Pioneer Valley’s world class impoundments on Monday through to Wednesday.
Team BCF will be defending its title with returning angler Liam Carruthers from Sydney and newcomer Mark Healey of Lake Macquarie, winner of the Berkley Super Series Grand Final on Sydney Harbour earlier this year.
Team Jack Link’s anglers Mitchell Cone and Matthew Langford will be challenging Team BCF for the coveted title. Langford has just returned from the US where he represented Australia at the Bass Nations Championship finishing 7th in a field 115 anglers from 47 US states and 11 foreign countries.
AFC Promoter Michael Harris said the competitors were looking forward to experiencing the region’s highly regarded fishing credentials.
“The Australian Fishing Championships represent the pinnacle for tournament anglers. Hosting such a prestigious event will showcase The Mackay’s Region’s magnificent freshwater impoundments and in their plentiful barramundi will prove the ultimate test of skill,” he said.
With the AFC being broadcast into 450 million households across 18 countries and in five different languages, the event will significantly contribute to marketing The Mackay Region to fishing enthusiasts. Mackay Tourism Marketing Manager Morgana McDeed explained.
“Within 90 minutes of a major regional centre, anglers have access to a bonanza of varied and spectacular fishing destinations, including Seaforth’s net free zone, the blue water Pioneer River and of course our freshwater impoundments,” she said.
Ms McDeed continued, “just last week, two barramundi over the 130cm mark were successfully caught and released at Kinchant Dam. If a fish of similar size was caught during the AFC and televised across the world, The Mackay Region would cement its reputation as a must visit destination for fishing enthusiasts”.
