Mayor to take part in adrenelin-charged race down Pioneer River

Mackay will get the chance to see Mayor Cr Greg Williamson speed down the Pioneer River in an adrenalin-charged superboat, as organisers kick off promotions for the highly-anticipated 2016 Mackay Offshore Superboat Races.

The ‘Helicopter vs Superboat’ promo event will put sea and air engines to the test with radio personalities ‘Courtney and Johnno’ and Cr Williamson in an exhilarating and unique race.

The event will begin at the Forgan Smith Bridge and continue down to the river mouth, giving onlookers a sneak peek at what they can expect from the 2016 Mackay Offshore Superboat Races the following weekend on Saturday, August 6 & 7.

Event organizer and Mackay Marina’s Ben Anderson said the exciting pre-promotion was a chance for those closer to the city to be part of the action.

“We want to get the whole community involved in this event so we hope onlookers who catch a glimpse of the Helicopter vs Superboat race will be enticed to come along to the Superboats the following weekend,” Mr Anderson said.

“Anywhere along the Bluewater Trail near the bridge is a good vantage point.”

Mayor Greg Williamson said although it was an extreme way to kick off the event, he was happy to take part.

“There is no doubt our coastline and our beautiful blue river are stunning natural assets to our region, so what a great way to showcase them,” Cr Williamson said.

“I’m sure it will be a white-knuckle ride but I am really looking forward to the experience and am hopeful we can beat the helicopter crew in the race up the river,” he said.
