Tourist Centre thanks long-serving volunteer

Long-serving volunteer Hazel Weeks has retired from her role at Mackay Tourism’s Visitor Information Centre (VIC) today after 14 years.

Hazel said she was inspired to volunteer back in 2003 after hearing on the radio that they needed assistance.

“I heard they needed more volunteers and so I came down and started the same day,” Hazel said.

“It’s grown over the years; there were very few volunteers at the start and it’s now grown into a big family. I’m going to miss it very much.”

“The best part is meeting people from all around the world and it’s been amazing to see how many people from other areas that I know come through the VIC.”

Originally from South East Queensland, Hazel has done plenty of travelling over the years, but said Mackay had a special place in her heart due to the good weather and the many friends she has made.

“When we first came to Mackay, I knew within 24 hours that this is where I wanted to spend the rest of my life,” she said.

Hazel is also extremely active in the sporting community in Mackay, being involved in Mackay Cricket, NQ Cricket, CQ Cricket and is a life-time member of the Mackay Junior Tennis Club.

The staff and volunteers at Mackay Tourism wish to thank Hazel for her support, dedication and hard work over 14 years and wish her all the best for the future.
